Background
As part of a composites strategy client project, working with a multi-million-dollar global aerospace company, LES delivered an extensive M&A company screening analysis aided by extensive internal proprietary databases.
LES have developed a number of databases to support consultancy services containing in-depth analyses of companies within the global composites market which allow targeted down selection of filtering criteria including:
- Location: Country, City
- Company Size: Revenue, Employees
- Sector: Aerospace, Defence, Automotive, Space, UAM/UAV, Heavy Duty Vehicle, Passenger Transport, Marine, Industrial, Construction & Infrastructure, Oil & Gas, Digital & Technology, Healthcare, Leisure.
- Supplier Type: OEM, Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3, Equipment or Tooling Provider, Raw Materials, Consumables or Intermediates Supplier, R&D/Technology Centre, SME, Associations, Third Parties, Services and Consultants.
- Product/Service Type: Raw Material, Part Manufacture, Coatings and Finishings, Assembly, Maintenance & Repair, Testing, Recycling, Engineering Services, Machines and Equipment, Tooling.
- Technology Areas: Traditional/Advanced Composite, Traditional/Advanced Metallic, 3D additive, Joining, Multifunctional Structures, Traditional/Advanced Assembly, Digital Twin/Factory 4.0, Recycling
These databases also include a ‘one-pager’ overview of hundreds of composites focussed companies across various criteria including:
- Business Overview and Financial information
- Business Highlights
- Leadership and Growth Strategy
- Supply Chain Level
- Main Customers and Contracts
- Manufacturing Capabilities
- Engineering/Processing Capabilities
- R&D/Technology Capabilities
Scope & Deliverables
For this specific project, LES were to:
- Identify and acquire suitable M&A targets as part of a larger composites strategy project
- Support the acquisition of an established composites technology company to provide instant credibility in the market, as well as technical and production capability and skills.

APPROACH
LES deployed an experienced team of technology and strategy experts to support the M&A business case, by creating a plan of activity for the M&A screening process, and carry out all company analysis and strategic fit scoring.
The process began with a company large dataset companies, which have been mapped globally, spanning 15+ markets. LES was tasked with down selecting this list to a final shortlist of 10 companies which would be targeted for engagement to understand the acquisition route.
The companies mapped on the supply chain included a mixture of material suppliers, part manufacturers, assemblers, tooling suppliers and others (incl. testing, logistics, distributors, etc) across both composite and metallic materials and were filtered to only include companies with:
- Composite specific manufacturing technologies
- Aerospace capabilities and contracts
- Supply chain level within the specified bracket
- Revenue within the specified bracket
These filters reduced the list to around 100 companies for LES to perform a deep-dive analysis, understanding the specific business highlights, market presence and technology capabilities for each business
LES created a proprietary ‘one-pagers’ for each company, providing an extensive overview of the specific capabilities of each company on a site to site basis across the given criteria. The one-pager format was created and shared with the client using LES softwares and was used to analyse the opportunity each company could deliver if acquired.
Further analysis of client-driven criteria allowed LES to reduce the shortlist to around 10 companies which were then targeted as part of the next stage of the process.
LES provided the client with a series of detailed reports supported by a full debrief session.
