Background
The client is focussed on full product development, realisation and management of consumer goods, transportation and medical components. The client is committed to integrating their advanced material capabilities into their product offering to augment their contribution to environmental and economic sustainability, towards a steady state supply chain. Core to the client’s values is the integration of sustainability principles through-life to ensure that their solutions are contributing to building a better future for all.
With a focus on the Automotive sector, together with Leading Edge Strategy, market opportunity for a new thermoplastic product offering was established. Our team at LES continue to support the client in product development, technology, and marketing strategies to make this product a reality and materialise the benefit of the client’s vision.
Scope & Deliverables
- Automotive thermoplastic composite structures market study
- Thermoplastic composite structure product development and realisation planning
- Sustainable development opportunity analysis and strategy support
- Industrialisation strategy identification
- Testing and certification strategy identification
- Marketability analysis

A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH
LES provided a team of engineering, technology, and strategy experts to carry out a review of market size and opportunity for a thermoplastic structural vehicle product. Having established the market opportunity, LES continue to support the client to achieve a thermoplastic vehicle structure with improved performance, durability, and environmental performance.
A key focus of the product’s sustainability strategy is leveraging the client’s capabilities in advanced material processing for the reintegration of recycled materials from their value chain into automotive sub-structures towards a steady state supply chain. Integration of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG) and Circular Economy principles, on this project, further reinforces LES’s continued commitment to sustainable development.
Key activities undertaken by the LES team on this project were:
- 9R Circular Economy thinking integrated across product development and management activities (R0 Refuse, R1 Rethink, R2 Reduce, R3 Reuse, R4 Repair, R5 Refurbish, R6 Remanufacture, R7 Repurpose, R8 Recycle, R9 Recover)
- LES “refused” to use materials that provided inferior operational performance, with hazardous handling conditions in production or at end-of-life, to ensure “good health and well-being” (towards UN SDG 3). Such decisions support the reduction of illness from hazardous chemicals and air, water and soil pollution and contamination reduction, aligned with UN SDG Target 3.9.
- A resource and cost-efficient manufacturability strategy integrating state-of-art processing innovation
- LES designed for resource efficiency and weight minimisation during production and operation to “Reduce” the use of natural resources in creating the product and fuelling the vehicle. This highlights a commitment to UN SDG 12 “responsible consumption and production”, including Target 12.2 to “achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources”.
- LES innovated to support UN SDG Target 9.4 for “increased resource-use efficiency and greater adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies and industrial processes”.
- Steady state supply chain strategy development towards the reintegration of production and end-of-life wastes into secondary lifecycle component routes
- LES compounded considerations for the reduction of natural resource reliance with a design for recyclability strategy to support the UN SDG 12 for “responsible consumption and production” Target 12.5 to “substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse”.
- The strategy also exposes the client to a lesser vulnerability and susceptibility to external market conditions for UN SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth.
