Background
The client is a major international supplier of advanced composite structures to the aerospace industry, with a strong focus in developing and maintaining market leadership in the area of advanced composite materials technologies , with a right balance of excellent mechanical properties, production rate readiness and quality. The client has developed a reputation as a trusted aerospace supplier, with components and structures deployed on key commercial and military aerospace programmes worldwide.
In order to further establish the client’s position in global aerospace supply chains, Leading Edge Strategy is supporting the company in terms of programme management and expert technical consultant support in a series of material & structure development programmes to demonstrate the effectiveness of the company’ composites technologies in critical aerostructure applications. This includes development around the substitution of structures made from more traditional materials, such as titanium or aluminium, with advanced composites materials solutions. LES provides continual and ongoing support to the client to identify and exploit further opportunities in the composite aerostructure application’ space specific to their technologies and advanced capabilities.
One of the major development programmes supported by Leading Edge Strategy involves establishing a route to qualification and certification for specific client’s composite technologies and applications for deployment in future aerostructures. This programme is intended to demonstrate a viable method of qualifying & certifying the new materials and structures applications in the same manner as more established materials, such as pre-preg and metallics, for use in critical aerostructures.
Key activities undertaken by the LES team on this project were:
- Utilisation of LES network to assemble world-leading team of experts in different composites disciplines: design, stress, analysis, test
- Technical support in terms of design, analysis, manufacture and testing: scoping manufacturing and test plans, analysing results, input to analysis and test methodologies
- Programme management of programme in collaboration with client to effectively manage resource usage & meet timescales in-line with global aerostructures development programmes & delivery expectations
- Co-ordination of programme activities such as workshops, technical working sessions & management meetings to make progress against plan in line with target
- Support with generation of technical documents: test & analysis plans, technical packs

A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH
By advancing the use of advanced woven composite materials in aerostructures, the project contributes to the development of lighter, more fuel-efficient aircraft, reducing environmental impact through lower fuel consumption and emissions. This aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UN SDG) 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, by promoting sustainable industrialization and fostering innovation. Additionally, the reduction in weight supports UN SDG 13: Climate Action, by mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.
